Guwahati Mayor offers 10% rebate to early property taxpayers FY next

The mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Mrigen Sarania announced during the inauguration of a new bus queue shelter in the Dispur area of the city, that early property taxpayers would receive a 10% rebate on their taxes starting from the next financial year.

Sarania stated that property owners who pay their property taxes within the first two months of the upcoming fiscal year, between April 1 and May 31, would be eligible for the 10% rebate on their property tax.

He mentioned that due to the low tendency of property tax payments in the current fiscal year and in previous years, the corporation had decided to offer rebates to taxpayers who clear their tax dues within the specified period.

The mayor further explained that a similar initiative was undertaken by the corporation last year as well, with the aim of encouraging a greater number of people to pay taxes and contribute to the city's development.

To address tax defaulting issues, the GMC had issued over 50 warrants against tax defaulters in February, aiming to recover over Rs 20 million in taxes.

Sarania noted that many of the defaulters had come forward to pay their taxes after receiving the warrants, while legal actions had already been initiated against the remaining defaulters.
