Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor, announced that the Jammu and Kashmir administration had initiated the provision of 150 square yard plots to landless families in the area for the purpose of constructing their homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). Sinha mentioned that each landless family would receive five marlas of land (1,360 sq ft). Sinha informed that a few years ago, Modi had made the decision to ensure that every impoverished individual had a roof over their head. The primary challenge in this regard was the absence of provisions for granting land to landless families. However, Sinha stated that they had addressed this issue by approving a provision within the administrative council to allocate land for housing construction under the PMAY. He further explained that 2,711 landless families across Jammu and Kashmir had already received plots, and they aimed to fulfill the existing backlog by March 2024 based on their current list. Sinha believed that this initiative would significantly improve the lives of the impoverished and landless people in Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha emphasised the efforts of the rural development department in identifying 1.83 lakh families who lacked proper housing. He regarded this as a transformative step that would not only provide shelter but also lead to a positive change in their lives. With their housing needs addressed, these families could focus on securing better livelihoods and education for their children, thereby setting them on the path to development. The Lieutenant Governor expressed the commitment of the Union Territory administration to provide land to the remaining landless families, considering it their duty to do so. He also mentioned the success they had achieved in delivering social justice to the people over the past 3-4 years, asserting that their actions were consistent with their words. Regarding the new scheme, Sinha declined to provide details about the beneficiaries, stating that they did not discriminate based on religion or region.
