In a remote village near Musiri, Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram via video-conferencing from Chennai. The memorial, consisting of 100 houses, was specifically allocated to beneficiaries from the Kattukulam village panchayat. The event was attended by Trichy Collector M Pradeep Kumar, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), S Devanathan, and several MLAs in Trichy.
The houses in the Samathuvapuram were allotted by the DRDA following reservation norms. Out of the 100 houses, 40 were awarded to individuals from the Scheduled Castes (SCs), 25 each to people from the Most Backward Class (MBC) and Backward Class (BC), and 10 houses were designated for others.
The establishment of the Samathuvapuram at Periya Kattukulam faced legal hurdles, delaying its functionality since 2010, despite the completion of house construction and infrastructure development. However, with the legal matters resolved, the government allocated 112.81 lakh for the renovation of the entire Samathuvapuram. Spanning across a vast 9.47-acre area, this Samathuvapuram is the eighth of its kind in Trichy. It offers various amenities such as roads, a playground, a park, a ration shop, and an overhead water tank.
Trichy already boasts seven functioning Samathuvapurams in Inamkulathur, Kallakudi, Pannampatti, Ezhoorpatti, Thalambadi, Aarachi, and Kannanur, all of which have fully occupied houses, according to Project Director Devanathan.
