The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court took a serious view of unauthorised construction in Thoothukudi and directed the Corporation Commissioner to take proper steps to remove those constructions. Far too often, the high and mighty in real estate have mocked the law with political benevolence, the Madras High Court observed on Thursday. Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice S. Ananthi took a serious view of illegal construction in Thoothukudi, and urged the Corporation Commissioner to take proper steps to eliminate those structures as no leniency can be shown towards such illegal constructions. There was a large-scale deviation in construction, and some of the floors were constructed, without approval. Laws must be enforced strictly to avoid these kinds of constructions, in the future. Proper action should be taken, by the authority to ensure that such unauthorised constructions never take place in the future, said the court. The demolition of such buildings must be done in such a way so that it should act as a strong deterrent to people who build such buildings in breach of rules. The court was hearing public interest litigation (PIL) filed by S.T. Karunanithi from Thoothukudi. He complained that one S. Thanaraja had constructed a commercial building in violation of the plan. Before taking action against the unauthorised construction, the court directed the authorities to give a fair opportunity to the owner of the building.
