Mumbai Film City: State converts 130 acres of land into industrial zone

In response to popular industry demand, the state government's Urban Development Department (UDD) has converted nearly 130 acres of land in Mumbai's Film City from a no-development zone to an industrial zone.

According to an official, the move is expected to facilitate redevelopment of the property and attract more investors.

UDD is now seeking public feedback on the proposed additions to the property in question.

Manisha Verma, Managing Director of Film City Corporation, stated that they had requested that the department convert some land into an industrial zone to aid in the development of high-quality infrastructure for production and post-production facilities.

They currently own 521 acres at Film City, with only 360 acres in the industrial zone. A total of 130 acres have now been designated as an industrial zone.

According to the official, the change in land use classification will facilitate the development of amenities such as convention centres, studios, including those that offer special effects, outdoor locations, administration offices, small screen theatres, and amphitheatres, all of which are critical to the sector's growth and the production of job opportunities and revenue for the state.

Officials claimed the change in categorization will assist Film City to modernise its infrastructure at a time when other states, such as Uttar Pradesh, are competing for filmmakers.

They believe that by changing the land classification, they will be able to obtain a Floor Space Index (FSI) of 1 for construction, which will allow them to improve their infrastructure and compete with other states.

Another officer stated that the renovation seeks to transform Film City into a Hollywood studio-like environment.
