Panvel Waives Property Tax for Ex-Servicemen, Widows

The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to grant a cent percent exemption in general tax, which makes up a significant portion of the total property tax paid by property holders, to all ex-servicemen and their widows residing within the civic body jurisdiction area under the Balasaheb Thackeray Ex-Servicemen Sanman Yojana. This decision was made in response to persistent demand from various quarters.

The waiver went into effect on April 1, 2023, with retroactive effect. PCMC reports that general tax is the head under which property owners pay 55% of the total property tax.

PCMC commissioner and administrator Ganesh Deshmukh said, ?We have followed up the matter with the state government and finally got its nod to waive off the entire general tax for ex-servicemen who have served the nation and demonstrated bravery at the borders.?

All ex-servicemen and their widows living in the PCMC area will receive a 100% general tax exemption under the Balasaheb Thackeray Ex-serviceman and his widow wife tax exemption scheme, per a decision made by the general administration department of the Government of Maharashtra. The city's ex-servicemen community is celebrating the ruling because it resolves a long-standing issue. Former service members were previously free from general tax at the rate of 8%, however this has since increased to 100%.

When asked, PCMC deputy municipal commissioner and head of tax department Ganesh Shete said ?The general tax amount already paid by the ex-servicemen from April to August this year will be adjusted in the next property tax bills. There are over 500 beneficiaries in the city.?

To take advantage of this incentive, PCMC has urged former military members to submit their applications as soon as possible to the appropriate ward offices.
