Pune Cantonment Board to review old and dilapidated buildings

Dilapidated buildings will be surveyed by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) in its jurisdiction from next week.

The meeting will be conducted by the staffers from the engineering section of the board. Their primary focus will be the wall and roof structures, a PCB official told the media, saying that there were unsafe old buildings mainly in the Solapur Bazaar, Modikhana and Bhimpura areas of the Cantonment.

PCB's CEO, Amit Kumar, told the media that if a structure is in bad condition, we will send an eviction notice to the owner under section 297 of the Cantonment Act 2006. The roofs of the buildings are made of wood and soil.

A senior official from the PCB's engineering section told the media that they have become weak over the years because of the percolation of rainwater. He added that the roof of one such building fell on Friday and that a woman and a child suffered minor injuries.

Kumar said that PCB sent an eviction notice to the owners of these constructions in the past. He said that the dispute between the owners and tenants had become the main hurdle in many cases.
