DPIIT aids states to enhance business environment

The Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Rajesh Kumar Singh, stated during a press briefing that the union government would assist states in the simplification, rationalisation, or decriminalisation of provisions to encourage ease of doing business and living in the country. Singh mentioned that he was speaking subsequent to the passage of a bill in the Parliament, which aimed to promote ease of business by making amendments to 183 provisions of 42 Acts, leading to the decriminalization of minor offenses. He further added that there would be multiple subsequent instances of this effort with the overall goal of fostering an environment conducive to ease of doing business and living comfortably.

The Rajya Sabha passed the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023 through a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had previously approved the legislation on July 27. The bill converts various fines into penalties, eliminating the need for court prosecution to impose sanctions.

Furthermore, it eliminates the use of imprisonment as a penalty for numerous offenses. The bill also does away with all offenses under the Post Office Act of 1898.
