Automobile exports from India increased by 15.5% year-on-year in the June quarter, with all segments except three-wheelers recording growth, according to the latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Overall shipments reached 1,192,577 units in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, up from 1,032,449 units in the same period last year. Passenger vehicle exports saw a significant rise, standing at 180,483 units, a 19% increase from 152,156 units in the same period last year. Maruti Suzuki India led the segment with 69,962 units shipped, up from 62,857 units in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. Hyundai Motor India followed, exporting 42,600 units, compared to 35,100 units in the same period last year. Two-wheeler exports grew by 17%, reaching 923,148 units in the first quarter, compared to 791,316 units a year ago. Commercial vehicle shipments also saw an 8% year-on-year increase, totalling 15,741 units, up from 14,625 units in the previous year. However, three-wheeler shipments declined by 3%, dropping to 71,281 units from 73,360 units in the April-June period of the previous year. Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM commented on the positive trend, stating, It's a very good sign that exports seem to have bottomed out, especially in the commercial vehicle segment. We have started seeing growth from the first quarter this year. He noted the significant drop in export volumes of trucks and buses last year, but expressed optimism about the recovery, highlighting improvements in both two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. In the previous fiscal year, automobile exports from India had declined by 5.5% due to monetary crises in various overseas markets, with overall exports standing at 4,500,492 units, down from 4,761,299 units in FY23.
