Adilabad airport is all set to become a reality as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials responded positively to the requests of the Telangana government. Adilabad airport would be one of the six airports intended to be built in various parts of the state. Roads and building department superintendent engineer Suresh Rathod said that the AAI officials believe that Adilabad town was conducive for setting an airport. Accordingly, they examined the land and different aspects needed to establish the airport. There are no significant barriers, and the land for the facility has been acquired. The remaining 49 acres of land are to be identified by the officials of the revenue department. An aerodrome was set on a sprawling 369-acre landscape on the peripherals of Adilabad town for refueling fighter aircraft in 1930. After independence, it was brought under the power of the Indian Airforce (IAF). It was used as a refueling point again for helicopters employed for training pilots till the late 1970s. The IAF intended to convert the aerodrome into a full-fledged air force station in 2014. It had asked the district administration to identify adequate land for this plan. Therefore, 1,600 acres of land were identified by the authorities involved under the limits of Khanapur, Kachakanti, Anukunta, and Thantoli villages abutting the current aerodrome, in 2017.
