BMC to hire bridge audit agency for auditing 344 bridges in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has proposed appointing an agency to inspect around 344 bridges in Mumbai for a period of five years.

A tender to inspect bridges in the island city is currently being floated, and municipal officials have cited that a tender to appoint an agency to inspect bridges throughout the city will be floated soon.

It was a long-pending proposal, according to a city official. Due to lack of manpower and machinery, he believes that an agency should be established to conduct not only routine inspections at least twice a year but also detailed inspections as needed. He went on to say that separate agencies would be set up to inspect bridges in the city and suburbs.

The BMC commissioned Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute(VJTI) to conduct a structural audit of all 24 skywalks following the collapse of the Himalaya Bridge at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus(CSMT) in March 2019.

Furthermore, it had requested that all of the bridges in the city be re-evaluated.

The same firms that audited bridges in the city re-audited bridges in the suburbs. The plan, according to officials, is to have all bridges inspected on a regular basis.

According to a municipal official, an expert committee has recommended that an expert agency be appointed as well.
