Ludhiana to shortly receive 100 e-buses

Ludhiana city will soon receive 100 electric buses as part of the Prime Minister's E-Bus Sewa Yojana in a move towards environmental sustainability.

In October, the municipal corporation plans to start the tendering procedure for the first batch of e-buses. Government officials are required to submit to the chief secretary by September 25 the bus routes, identification of the bus depot site, region, and current schedule of private bus operators.

Officials from the local authority have disclosed plans to set up four bus depots as charging stations for the city's incoming fleet of electric buses. The agency already operates two depots at Hambran Road and Tajpur Road, and Transport Nagar has been designated as the site of a third depot. In Ludhiana, the e-buses will run on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) system. In accordance with this arrangement, central aid will be provided on a per-kilometre basis for a ten-year period to support bus operations.

While the drivers of the e-buses will be employed by the contractor, the conductors will be chosen by the city authority.
