Pamban Bridge worth Rs 560 cr to be completed by this year

The construction work of the new Pamban Bridge will be completed by December this year with an estimated cost of Rs 560 crore.

The 2 km long bridge is India's first vertical lift sea bridge which would open upwards to let big ships pass through it. It will be developed by Railway Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

The new bridge will be more advanced with robust technology. The trains can run at a maximum speed of just ten kmph on the existing bridge, while on this new one, they can go up to 80 kmph.

The under-construction new bridge will be a boon for devotees and pilgrims who wish to venture on a spiritual journey to Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi.

An official said that the old bridge is a single-line, non-electrified track, whereas the new one will be a double-line, electrified railway track.

The old bridge restricted the movement of freight trains, while they would be allowed on the new one.

Initially, the new bridge was scheduled to be operational last year in September. However it was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
