India Railways records highest electrification of sections in 2020-21

The Ministry of Railways told the media that Indian Railways has recorded the highest-ever electrification of sections covering 6,015 route km (rkm) in 2020-21.

According to the ministry, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the national transporter registered the highest ever electrification of sections across the Indian Railways network in FY21.

Indian Railways exceeded the earlier highest electrifications of 5,276 route km and achieved the highest ever electrification of sections, covering 6,015 route km in 2020-21. The total broad gauge (BG) routes of 10,364 route km were commissioned during the period between May 2019 to March 2021.

The ministry further said that end-to-end connectivity was provided on many important railway routes by electrification of missing links accompanying the first time Indian Railway's connectivity to the north-east part of the country. By December 2023, the national transporter has planned to fully electrify its rail tracks.

Earlier, the ministry had said that the total rail electrification would add to net zero emissions by the year 2030 by bringing its complete electrical load from the sources of renewable energy.

Major sections electrified by the Indian Railways over the year are :

  • Delhi 鈥 Darbhanga 鈥 Jaynagar section
  • Mumbai 鈥 Howrah section via Jabalpur
  • Jabalpur 鈥 Nainpur 鈥 Gondia 鈥 Ballarshah section
  • Gorakhpur 鈥 Varanasi section via Aunrihar
