Tata Steel Group commissioned its first steel recycling unit having an annual capacity of 0.5 million tonne per annum (mtpa) in collaboration with Aarti Green Tech Limited as a build-own-operate (BOO) partner in Rohtak, Haryana.
The company did not reveal financial details concerning the steel recycling plant.
The company said that it is the first such plant in India, equipped with modern and mechanised equipment.
The scrap would be obtained from different market segments through the app FerroHaat.
The scrap would then be treated through mechanised equipment and supplied for downstream steel production.
The company said that the steel produced through the recycled route entails lower emissions of carbon, resource consumption, and energy utilisation.
Tata Steel, steel recycling business chief, Yogesh Bedi, said that the steel can be recycled many times, and doesn鈥檛 lose its properties. From that view, steel scrap is a valuable resource and an essential raw material for steel production in future.
Bedi said recycling scrap ensures the end of the circular economy loop.
Tata FerroBaled, and Tata FerroShred, the two new brands, were also launched by Tata steel for the baled and shredded ferrous scrap produced in the new plant.
Tata Steel, one of the leading global steel companies with an annual crude steel capacity of 34 million tonnes per annum. In the financial year, March 31, 2021, ending it recorded a consolidated turnover of $ 21.06 billion.
