Drone, DGPS surveys to start in Thiruvananthapuram鈥檚 selected areas

The city-level committee has sanctioned the drone and differential global positioning system (DGPS) survey to be conducted, as part of executing the Local Area Plan (LAP) and Town Planning Scheme (TPS) in Thiruvananthapuram.

While Vizhinjam, Mulloor, Kottapuram and Venganoor have been selected as the regions for the preparation of TPS, the Palayam, Thampanoor, Vazhuthacaud and Thycaud wards have been chosen for the preparation of the LAP in the city.

The Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies (TNIUS), the agency authorised to conduct the survey, will be carrying out the drone, DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System), traffic and transportation and socio-economic surveys in this regard shortly. DGPS is likely to provide better location accuracy over Global Positioning Survey and would exceed challenges arising from the nature of the terrain. It will additionally yield fast outcomes.

The chief town planner had earlier noted that the scheme areas have to be surveyed by UAVs or drones for preparing land-use maps and asked for approval for carrying out the aerial survey using a drone. The state government has already formed a committee including four members to watch and manage the survey at the special security zone since the survey using a drone would include the movement of a drone in restricted areas and taking photographs and videos.

Special approval has been given for carrying out the drone survey. The state capital is one among the 25 cities in India which have been selected for the execution of LAP and TPS as part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) project on a pilot basis.

The state high powered steering committee (SHPSC) meeting had sanctioned the proposal of the chief town planner (planning) to make required amendments in the Kerala Town and Country Planning Act, 2016 for the formulation and execution of LAP, and TPS in the city.

LAP envisions redeveloping city areas that have been densified over time and subjected to unscientific land use without adequate infrastructure or public facilities. Congested inner-city areas, non-availability of road space and public spaces will be approached with the execution of LAP.

LAP creates a framework for enhancing the public realm by allowing the redevelopment of the current constructed environment and preparation of a new layout with improved infrastructure provision.
