We are trying to bridge infrastructure diversity through JNNURM.

DHARMENDRA, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, talks on how the Government is planning to boost infrastructure development in the country.

´India is marching ahead with development, maintenance and redevelopment activities. We have entered the Twelfth Five-Year Plan with a huge investment proposal of $1 trillion in the infrastructure sector. While cultural diversity is a sign of a vibrant country, infrastructure diversity reflects the lack in progress and beckons an urgent need to boost infrastructure development. Through JNNURM, our flagship scheme, we are trying to bridge infrastructure diversity by providing infrastructure to local bodies, capitals, municipalities, etc, to fill the gaps as early as possible. Moreover, in partnership with NPCC, we are redeveloping government colonies with investment of thousands of crores. Hence, with construction activities slated for the next five to 10 years in the capital city of Delhi, the sector is set to witness a huge fillip. However, the responsibilities of the construction sector cannot be ignored in terms of the amount of waste it generates and resources it consumes. On part of the ministry, we are ensuring that construction waste materials are reprocessed into a useful product that can be consumed in the project itself. Clearances related to environment, noise, demolition waste, etc, must be adhered to and construction industry majors will have to take care of the same. Such adherence will lead to sustainable development in the construction sector, in urban and rural areas. I hope this process of awarding companies in the construction sector continues as this will certainly give a boost, especially to the private sector, to introduce innovative schemes and programmes.´
