In a major infrastructure boost for East Delhi, the Delhi government has approved the construction of a 5.5-km elevated corridor in the Sonia Vihar鈥揚ushta region. The ?500-crore project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the trans-Yamuna belt, was cleared by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following a detailed proposal submitted by the Public Works Department (PWD). Stretching from Nanaksar Gurudwara to Shani Mandir near the Uttar Pradesh border, the elevated road will serve as a key arterial route for thousands of daily commuters. Designed to resolve long-standing traffic issues in the area, the corridor is expected to pave the way for further infrastructure development in this fast-growing zone of the Capital. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma highlighted that the elevated design was chosen to avoid large-scale tree felling. 鈥淒ue to the dense tree cover in the area, a conventional road was not feasible. The flyover solution allows us to preserve the ecology while addressing traffic woes. Work will commence following final coordination with the Flood Department,鈥� he noted. Local MLA and Minister Kapil Mishra, a long-time proponent of the project, hailed the move as a 鈥渉istoric win鈥� for residents of trans-Yamuna. 鈥淭his flyover is the result of persistent efforts and shows that the BJP government is delivering on its promises. It will bring substantial relief to lakhs of commuters who battle daily gridlocks on this stretch,鈥� he said. The Sonia Vihar project forms part of a wider urban mobility strategy by the Delhi government. Other key developments include the creation of dedicated corridors along both banks of the Sahibi river, extending from Dhasa to Wasai Darapur, to ease traffic through western Delhi. In addition, four critical road stretches currently under PWD jurisdiction鈥攑ortions of NH-10, NH-2, and NH-148A鈥攁re set to be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for enhanced maintenance and expansion. Further plans include the relocation of a police post near Dhaula Kuan metro station and the construction of a new slip road from NH-48 to Naraina to streamline access to IGI Airport and reduce congestion in Delhi Cantonment. Minister Verma reaffirmed the government's resolve to modernise urban mobility infrastructure and deliver people-centric development across the Capital.
