Kochi Metro to use AI cameras for passenger profiling

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) plans to will introduce a system of passenger profiling with artificial intelligence (AI) assistance, which it claims will help improve the travel experience.

All passengers travelling in the metro would be profiled according to their gender and age, using AI cameras being installed in the stations. The cameras would also be used for general surveillance such as assessment of the inflow of the passengers and to recognize missing luggage.

The initiative is part of the second phase of the data analytics platform development project being jointly implemented by Kochi Metro and Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology.

The cameras with facial recognition technology would recognize the gender and age of passengers and they will also identify the student commuters by recognizing their school or college uniforms.

鈥淭he project is an industry-academic collaboration aiming to provide better facilities to the commuters,鈥� said Jaison Paul, principal investigator of the project and vice-principal of Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology.

鈥淲e are using sophisticated and open-source technology for assistance. Using AI cameras, we will provide commuter data on hourly, daily, weekly and monthly bases,鈥� he said, adding that a predictive module which can forecast the number of passengers in the upcoming weeks also is a speciality of the system.
