Dwarf container train services launched from JNPT

Dwarf container train service was flagged off from the JawaharLal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) on Monday.

With this, the first laden dwarf containers consignment from the dwarf container depot (DCD) at the port was being transferred by train to Kanpur's Inland container depot (ICD), as per a statement.

The port is set to gain constantly from the dwarf container train services implementation from JNPT, as the rail movement of EXIM cargo by double-stacked dwarf containers, would give a competitive price advantage to the EXIM community, ending in an improvement in port cargo traffic through the rail route.

Dwarf containers are lesser in height than normal ISO containers by 660 millimeters, providing them a logistical edge.

The Low height of dwarf containers loaded on trailers can move through rural, semi-urban, and urban roads through limited height subways and level crossing in electrified sections.

Dwarf containers, when double-stacked, also offer a higher volume of 67% and can carry a weight of 71 tonne as against 40 tonne by an ISO container.

Additionally, Indian Railways has given a 17% discount on haulage price against double stack ISO container trains, ending in an overall 33% discount to shippers making Indian Railways competitive.

Through Dwarf containers, the cargo rail movement has the potential to lower the EXIM logistics prices.
