Jal Jeevan Mission: Western Coalfields transforms villages

Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) is providing purified potable mine water at the doorsteps of the villagers under the Jal Jeevan Mission, while also generating revenue for the women of the villages through the Self Help Group (SHG) scheme.

WCL has built an integrated water purification and bottling Coal Neer complex in Patansaongi village, about 25 km from Nagpur City, that can purify 2.5 lakh litres of water per day.

It has a 5-stage RO-based water purification plant with a capacity of over 10,000 l per hour and a bottling capacity of 15,000 bottles per day.

The water comes from the nearby Patansaongi underground coal mine.

WCL has partnered with the Women SHG of Patansaongi village to distribute purified Coal Neer in a 20 l jar to nearby villagers as part of a one-of-a-kind scheme. Each jar costs Rs 5, of which SHG keeps Rs 3.

This facility has benefited around 10,000 people in eight nearby villages, and coverage in other villages is growing by the day.

Other CIL coal companies, such as Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLCIL), have begun supplying surplus mine water to villages in and around their command area for both domestic and irrigation purposes.

In the next five years, the Ministry of Coal has devised an ambitious plan to provide 4600 million cubic metres of surplus mine water for domestic and irrigation use to nearby villages of various coal companies, benefiting approximately 16.5 lakh people.
