Pune Civic body nears completion of water supply improvement study

The comprehensive examination by the civic administration aimed at enhancing water availability in Ambegaon, Dhayari, Jambhulwadi, and Narhe is nearing completion, with the anticipated submission of the detailed project report (DPR) next month.
Over the past six years, these areas were gradually incorporated into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits. Despite this integration, residents expressed dissatisfaction with the water supply, citing a lack of improvement.
As part of its initiative, the civic administration initiated studies covering all 23 areas incorporated into the PMC jurisdiction. The preparation of DPRs is underway in a systematic manner, with pipeline installation already underway in the merged areas of Bavdhan.
Officials from the PMC's water supply department reported that the DPR for Wagholi and Lohegaon was recently finalised. Currently, the administration is in the process of developing a similar DPR for Ambegaon and its neighboring areas. The study is focused on devising a detailed plan for the installation of new water distribution pipelines, the establishment of overhead tanks, and the development of a distribution network. Once the DPRs are completed, they will undergo further approvals.
Residents in Ambegaon, Narhe, Dhayari, and Jambhulwadi have witnessed a significant population increase over the past decade. Local resident Harsh Kale expressed disappointment, stating that they have been awaiting improvements in water supply for the past five years. Despite being under the PMC, these areas still experience inadequate water supply compared to central areas, leading residents to incur substantial expenses on water tankers. While pipelines have been laid in some regions, distribution lines are still pending.
Mahesh Gaikwad, another resident, acknowledged the positive step of the PMC conducting a study but emphasised the need for immediate measures to alleviate daily hardships. He suggested that the administration increase water tanker trips and provide tankers at reasonable charges for swift relief.
