Tata Secures $990 Million Loan for UK’s Largest Battery Plant

01 May 2025
A unit of Tata Sons Pvt. has secured a £750 million ($990.79 million) loan to build what could become the largest battery manufacturing facility in the UK. Agratas Energy Storage Solutions Pvt., a unit of Tata Sons, signed the two-year bridge loan agreement with a consortium of 15 banks, making it one of the top three foreign currency loans for an Indian company in 2025.

The loan will fund the construction of a battery cell factory in the UK, which is expected to meet nearly half of the automotive sector's projected battery capacity needs by the early 2030s. The loan deal is priced based on the Sterling Overnight Index Average (SONIA), with disbursements still ongoing.

This move comes amid a 23 per cent rise in foreign currency loans by Indian borrowers, totalling $6.6 billion year-to-date, reflecting growing global demand for manufacturing infrastructure. Agratas, with factories in India and the UK, is poised to play a key role in the UK's energy storage and electric vehicle market.
