PM Modi to inaugurate housing project for poor in Bengaluru

If the Housing Department鈥檚 proposals come through, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the housing project for the urban poor in Bengaluru in December.

The plan, envisioned during the tenure of the former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah in 2016, strives at building one lakh homes. In 2018, the government had invited bids to build the houses, but procuring the required land proved to be a difficult task for the officials due to the land crunch.

Later, during the Congress-JDS government, the then chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy extended the scheme to different cities in Karnataka. However, there was not much progress.

The project, though, gained momentum during the tenure of BS Yediyurappa as CM. In May 2021, Housing Minister V Somanna had even declared that Yediyurappa would hand over the first 6,000 homes to the beneficiaries on August 15. But, there was a change of guard in the state with Yediyurappa resigning from the CM鈥檚 post.

Under the project, each home will value Rs 5 lakh for the general category and Rs 4.2 lakh for SC and ST beneficiaries.

Approximately 4,000 homes will be fully achieved in the next fortnight. They have land and approval to build 65,000 homes across the city, of which 42,000 are in different stages of development. 亚博体育官网首页s are being built in 46 areas on 316 acres.
