The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has chosen to utilise Geo-Information System (GIS) to observe the number of properties in the city and also use artificial intelligence (AI) for estimating the size of the multi-storied buildings. The KMC will utilise advanced technology, as it has frequently failed to survey the properties. Every year, a huge number of properties have come up in the city. However, most of them are not added to the civic body鈥檚 property tax net. Many property owners have approached the civic body to survey their properties and begin collecting tax from them. But due to staff shortage, the process of survey, assessing and bringing the properties under the tax net has become slow. Yashpal Rajput, KMC鈥檚 systems manager, told the media that with the help of GIS, high-quality satellite images will be generated and with AI, the size of big properties will be determined. The data collected will be cross-checked with the data of properties available with the property tax department. The new properties will be manually evaluated and will be brought under the tax net. The civic body officials have studied the model adopted by Pune Municipal Corporation to review the properties using GIS technology. Pune is rapidly increasing in comparison to Kolhapur, and thus, surveying the properties in Kolhapur city will be much faster and easier, said Rajput. The KMC will start the survey utilising GIS and AI in one ward on a pilot basis, and after the results and corrections, if required, the technology will be utilised for monitoring properties from across the city.
