MHADA approves redevelopment of Old Chikhalwadi chawl in Mumbai

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has approved the cluster redevelopment of old Chikhalwadi chawl at Tardeo in south Mumbai .

It is spread across a 1.54 acres plot, with more than 200 people living in it. The chawl will make way for a 36 storey tower.

The redevelopment has been underway since 2002 and recently got approval from a high-powered panel appointed by the state. According to the officials, the difficulty is the redevelopment of the cluster with a width of 18 meters along the road around the plot.

The developers had sought permission to allow redevelopment with a 12-meters wide road, and in July, the state government approved the permission. With the MHADA's approval, this project will be the first redevelopment under the Cluster Development Scheme cleared under new rules.

The joint secretary of the residents association, Suraj Shetty, told the media that the project had begun with MHADA signing an agreement and had issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) to the builder.

He said that all the 228 tenants would get 583 sq ft of usable carpet area along with a Rs 6 lakh corpus fund. The association has asked the developer to keep a contingency fund, and the work is expected to commence next month. Also, the tenants support the redevelopment project.

Rajendra Chaturvedi, an official of the developer's firm, said that the project would be completed in the next four years.
