PMC calls for Lok Adalat to settle property tax disputes in Pune

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has convened a Lok Adalat to settle long-standing property tax disputes. On September 25, it will be held.

According to Hemant Rasane, the chairman of the standing committee, this alternative dispute resolution mechanism will resolve up to 500 cases.

If the tax defaulter agrees to pay the dues, the civic body will offer a 50% discount on the penalty, he said. He claims that the pending tax cases in Lok Adalat can bring in Rs 52 crore for PMC.

PMC officials have said that property tax collection by the civic body has surpassed Rs 1,000 crore on Friday, nearly Rs 211 crore higher than the same period the previous financial year.

Owners of 6.26 lakh properties paid the tax between April 1 and August 27 this year, according to PMC figures. Property taxes are assessed based on the annual rateable value of the property, said the officials. The municipal government provides two tax payment options.

They include both offline and online activities. The main sources of revenue for PMC were octroi and local body tax.

Since their abolition, property taxes have provided the civic body with the most revenue. This tax brings in around Rs 14,000 crore to Rs 16,000 crore per year for PMC.
