Delhi govt spends over Rs 1500 cr on road repairs in last two years

According to the Public Works Department, the Delhi government has spent over Rs 1,500 crore on road repairs in the national capital over the last two years.

In the fiscal year 2020-21, Rs 873.79 crore was set out for road and sense carpeting repairs, of which Rs 539.99 crore was paid. Similarly, an amount of Rs 1041.38 crore was set aside for the purpose in 2021-22, with Rs 985.96 crore spent, according to the response.

The Delhi government gave administrative authority and estimated sanctions for the streetscaping of four more sample segments of Aurobindo Marg, Lodhi Road, Nelsan Mandela Road, and the Jagatpuri to Karkardooma stretch earlier this month.

The Delhi government plans to decongest, redesign, and beautify 540 kilometres of roadways as part of the streetscaping initiative.

Redesigning roadways, according to PWD authorities, will minimise bottlenecks and improve the aesthetics of the road segment.

The project involves upgrading the road, improving its attractiveness, and adding user amenities like kiosks, seats, decorative lighting, and water ATMs to the roadside.

The length will be made pedestrian and bike-friendly, with designated cycling tracks and wide pathways, according to officials.

The Delhi government's public works department (PWD) is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of government assets in the fields of built environment and infrastructure development. Hospitals, schools, colleges, technical institutes, police buildings, prisons, and courts are examples of built-environment assets, while roads, bridges, flyovers, footpaths, and subways are examples of infrastructure development assets.
