Naresh Gupta, Regional Chief Executive, Bureau Veritas (South Asian Region)
Bureau Veritas was established in 1828 ’to seek out the truth and tell it without fear or favour. True to its name, the company has consistently built recognised expertise and is involved in various businesses marine, industry, inspection and in-service verification, health, safety and environment, construction, certification, and government services and international trade, etc. Each of these businesses offers a range of specific services and is designed to match the organisation’s need. While Bureau Veritas plays a key role in both risk management and performance improvement, the group's network of global, regional and local offices manages and delivers a comprehensive range of services as well as advisory assistance. Naresh Gupta, Regional Chief Executive, Bureau Veritas (South Asian Region), expounds more on the company and its activities.
What are the company’s offerings for the construction industry?
We have a comprehensive range of testing, inspection and certification services right from concept, design, construction. These services continue throughout the life of the constructed asset. They also include environmental engineering and impact assessment, geotechnical and ground improvement. We test all types of construction materials, inspection and safety during construction, NDT, condition assessment and restoration of all types of residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects.
How does the company contribute to the environment aspect in construction?
Environmental issues do remain important to all of us, and Bureau Veritas is committed to provide high value services to clients including the construction industry. We carry out environmental engineering and impact assessment, air and water quality monitoring, environmental audits, testing of air, water and soil, REACH compliance, etc. We also verify design and construction material that meets the environmental standards laid down and/or for green buildings.
What is the importance of quality, health, safety and environment in an organisation/project? Highlight your solutions.
QHSE remains an important aspect in our activities and operations. The company works in partnership with clients and helps them manage quality, health, safety, environmental and social accountability issues worldwide. I would also add the importance of social accountability in addition to QHSE as this makes our clients and all stake holders more confident on aspects of QHSE.
What do you think is the most pressing need of the construction industry today?
Managing risk, ensuring all technical, environment and safety compliance for timely execution and economic sustainability of industrial and infrastructural projects are very important. Sometimes, there is a misconception that the environment, safety and quality standards are complied with only because of regulations. Although this is undisputable, the stakeholders should appreciate that compliance to technical regulations adds to economic value saving cost (rework, surprises, etc) and timely completion.
We remain committed to providing to our customers the highest standards of QHSE services with our worldwide knowledge and local, next-door availability. This is possible because of our 52,000 employees, 940 offices and 340 laboratories in 140 countries.
What is your setup within the country? What are the capabilities of your organisation?
In India, our office was established as early as 1973 starting with services to the marine industry. Today, we have 4,000 employees, 40 locations and 35 laboratories across India. Our construction labs have a comprehensive range of facilities for all types of construction material, geotechnical and NDT with state-of-the-art equipment and NABL accreditation.
