Tamil Nadu sets up task force for PMAY-G beneficiaries

Tamil Nadu has set up a four-member special task force (STF) for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) to provide land to the landless.
In Tamil Nadu, beneficiaries of the PMAY-G are expected to receive land in the next two months.
According to a senior official in the rural development and panchayat raj department, the Tamil Nadu government has formed a four-member STF to expedite the identification and distribution of land to beneficiaries of the scheme.
The official said that the number of landless beneficiaries breached 45,000 in the state over the period.
In a letter dated 9th April 2021, the secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development pointed out that the delay in the land provision was one of the main causes for the slow progress of the PMAY-G scheme.
Since the programme was time-bound and executed with the purpose of housing for all by 2022, the ministry had urged the state government to expedite the process of providing land.
The Tamil Nadu government had created the STF following a suggestion from the Union ministry, said K Gopal, the principal secretary of rural development and panchayat raj, in an order.
He would be the vice-chairperson of the task force, while the revenue and disaster management department principal secretary would head the task force as its chairperson.
Land administration Commissioner and director of rural development, and panchayat raj would-be members and conveners of the task force.
Under welfare schemes, Chief Minister M K Stalin handed over benefits to the tune of Rs 1,597 crore, including houses built under the PMAY-G, to 12,093 beneficiaries. The rural development and panchayat raj department implemented these schemes.
